Parenting Without a Manual

Session 1A:  9:00am - 11:30am

This session will help parents of young children understand the driving forces behind child development.  Dr. Montessori identified four major sensitive periods that guide the development of the young child under the age of 6.  We will look at each of these motivators and how they unfold as the child progresses through the process of self-construction.  This exploration of the basic motivations guiding child development will be followed by a discussion of ways to prepare a supportive home environment and ideas for activities that support young children's self-construction naturally and simply.

The Core of Montessori

Parents frequently ask, "What is Montessori education?"  Responses to this question vary widely but often include language about mixed-age classrooms, hands-on learning, and brain-based curriculum.  while such responses are correct, they do not express the most important benefit - the core - of Montessori education and its contribution to the development of a child's authentic self-esteem.  The Core of Montessori will demonstrate this benefit in terms that are inspiring and truly relevant to parents.

Montessori: Following the Laws of Nature

This presentation offers an overview of Montessori education and children's natural motivations to learn, grow and develop.  Participants will learn how Montessori classrooms are prepared to support children physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually and intellectually in an integrated manner.  Because children grow and develop at their own pace, Montessori education is designed to fit each individual child, as well as the group.  Within the community of the classroom, developing empathy and social responsibility are equally as important as the intellectual and academic aspects of education.

A Montessori Vision of the Universal Family

Session 2B: 12:00pm - 1:30pm

James and Sarah introduce their concept of the Universal Family, focusing on the natural development of children and the supportive roles of family, school, and the greater community.  this presentation gives a positive view of parents, parenting, and the collaborative partnerships between teachers and parents in service to children and directly related to Montessori schools.  James and Sarah draw on their own experiences as Montessori educators and administrators as well as the parents of three children attending Montessori school.
