Elementary Course, Academic Year 2012 - 2013
Now Accepting Applications!
August 27, 2012 – June 8, 2013
Classes are held Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm
During the course students complete all requirements for the AMI Elementary diploma, which includes the integrated Primary Foundation Course content and observations and practice teaching sessions in Montessori Elementary classrooms. This course is provisionally approved by the Association Montessori Internationale.
The AMI Elementary teacher training course offers an in-depth study of Montessori theory and practice for working with children ages six to twelve. During 910 hours of teacher preparation, students are trained to work in the Montessori lower and upper elementary classrooms. The child at this age explores the universe through the use of imagination and a growing reasoning mind. A combination of hands-on materials and self-directed activity guided by the development of individual and social responsibility give the elementary aged child the interest and practical skills necessary to explore traditional academic studies as well as music, art, drama and history.
The Montessori elementary teacher works with the developmental characteristics of the elementary child, guiding children through an integrated curriculum that includes history, geometry, biology and geography in addition to mathematics and language arts. The Montessori teacher forms a strong bond with the children and is able to support their individual strengths as well as any difficulties that arise. Ideally, a child remains with the same teacher for the duration of the elementary years.
Students in the Elementary training course produce eight comprehensive reference albums to support their ongoing work with children:
- Montessori Theory Album - A comprehensive collection of the foundational Montessori theory guiding work with the elementary child
- Geography Album - Provides theory, stories, demonstrations and experiences related to the Work of Air, Water, the Sun, and the Earth
- Biology Album - Includes stories and activities related to the life and needs of plants and animals, and introduction of systems of classification
- History Album - Includes stories and activities related to the Coming of Life onto the planet and how human beings have met their fundamental needs throughout time
- Language Album - Provides theory and practice regarding the development of language, literacy and exploration of the structure and style of our common language
- Mathematics and Geometry Albums - These two albums explore the language of invention and discovery through stories and lessons in mathematics, arithmetic, number theory, algebra, solid and plane geometry and more
- Music Album - Introduces a thorough exploration of music theory and composition based upon musical activities with the Tone Bars and integrated into all of the other subject areas
In addition, students in the Elementary Training course will complete the required number of observation hours and practice teaching in AMI elementary classroom during the academic year.
